Biography
I’m Jeffrey Johnston
The key photographer (Director of Photography) and creative director behind Shogunmaster Photography. Welcome to my place I call ‘home’ on the web! I was born in Phoenix, Arizona but growing up, I moved around for my parents work which makes it hard for me to say I am originally from, but my professional life has led me from New Jersey/New York City to Seoul, Korea finally landing me in Nagoya, Japan in 2006. I am currently SOFA (日米地位協定) sponsored Civilian working on base and live in the heart of Tokyo splitting my time between Nagoya.
I’m pretty much a freelance event photographer that loves to be behind the camera, and for the most part a self-taught photographer. I started photography as a hobby way back when, but have been devoting more of my time and energy full time to photography. I’m passionate about a lot of things in life as you will learn from following me along my journey. Photography is an on-going passion and is the reason for this website. I have discovered that with photography, I have found a medium that enables me to express my creativity and use my abilities to view the world in a different way. As a member of the International Press Photographers Association, I’ve been featured in various newspapers and magazines in both Korea (1994-2006) and Japan (2006-present). I am also a contributor with Getty Contributor/iStockPhoto (Getty Images) and YourShot (National Geographic) photography communities.
A creator knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.
When I’m not doing other things, my artistic interests are in portrait photography and event work. Initially, I gained experience in the realm of crime scene/forensic evidence photography and often took photos during my various deployments and picked up street photography during my time in the Army – which is still, today, one of my hobbies and main interests. I work in Digital Marketing and I am lucky enough to have a job that allows me to enjoy the things I do. The combination of my love for photography coupled with my travels and a keen interest for technology make Shogunmaster Photography an enjoyable and rewarding hobby for me. I am currently learning about video content/editing. I’m also an avid billiards player and love baseball. I also run an online culture & lifestyle magazine called SPOT-Report. You can easily engage me in a conversation on any of these topics for hours.
There are many posts within Shogunmaster Photography of my favorite places in Nagoya/Kyoto/Tokyo, my travels or techniques in photography. As a photographer, I often get asked about what cameras/equipment I use, how I edit my images, what settings I use or where the best place is to shoot in Japan. If you are new here, I suggest you start here to see all that site has to offer. Most of my work is available for viewing, so if you wish to see an image or print that you can’t find in the gallery, please email me.
